Sony Ericsson has been in the news for its planned PlayStation phone, but now rumours of a new camera-focused smartphone from the manufacturer have emerged, suggesting that its Cybershot range is going to be added to in 2011.

Originally, this as yet unnamed smartphone was set to be a Japanese exclusive, but since then it has been approved by the FCC in the US, suggesting that an international launch is inevitable.

Onboard, its specs look healthy with a 1GHz processor, a slide-out portrait keypad and a touchscreen display. The most important of the specs is of course its camera, which will have a 16 megapixel sensor, allowing it to instantly eclipse previous big boys of the cameraphone market like the Nokia N8 and Sony Ericsson Vivaz.

In addition, the Sony Ericsson Cybershot phone appears to be water resistant and will support various contemporary forms of connectivity including GPS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA.

The chances of this powerful cameraphone making it to the UK are unknown and at the moment the prototype does not even have a mainstream operating system to speak of, so its development for an international market is likely to be ongoing.
