A follow-up to the Motorola Dext, which was called the Cliq when sold in the US, has appeared in some preliminary images online, suggesting that the smartphone manufacturer could be gearing up to release another mid-range Android handset in the new year.

The picture shows a smartphone with the MotoBLUR interface, sitting on top of an unidentified version of Android with a large touchscreen display lying on a slide-out QWERTY keypad.

The keypad itself has an odd honeycomb design in the images acquired by CellPhoneSignal, which would certainly give the phone a unique twist. Whether this will have an impact on usability remains to be seen, but Motorola has always opted for intriguing designs in the past, with the likes of the FlipOut acting as contemporary examples of this aesthetic innovativeness.

Reports suggest that this smartphone will have a five megapixel on the rear and is likely to have decent hardware specs to make sure that it fits in with the other smartphones that are inbound for 2011.

The first two months of next year will be packed with launch events and the combination of the Consumer Electronics Show in January and the Mobile World Congress in February, should deliver details on this and many more handsets.
