The Samsung Galaxy SThe multi-million selling Samsung Galaxy S is destined to get an update that will bring Android 2.3 to the smartphone, after an official announcement from the manufacturer.

This is no big surprise since the upcoming Google Nexus S is essentially a spruced-up Galaxy S with Google branding and so transposing the latest version of the platform onto its sibling, should be relatively straightforward.

This news was broken via Samsung’s official Twitter account for its Indian operation. Quite when Android 2.3 will actually make its way to the Galaxy S handsets in the UK is unknown, but the fact that it is coming at all can be counted as a good thing.

Various improvements to the software are made in Android 2.3, including an augmented copy and paste feature and better mobile gaming credentials integrated into the platform.

The Samsung Galaxy S has been one of the success stories of the year, with more than five million sold since its launch and particularly positive reviews from the media causing many to consider it an equal of the iPhone 4. The Nexus S may steal some of its thunder but a price war could put it in reach of many more consumers this Christmas.
