BlackBerry Torch 9800UK consumers bought more BlackBerry handsets last year than they did iPhones, according to the latest retail figures published by GfK.

This means BlackBerry smartphones were more popular than the much loved Apple handset, based on sales figures gathered from mainstream sales channels.

BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM), will probably be very happy with its 28.2 per cent share of the UK mobile market which it captured in 2010. Its share of sales in the Christmas period was even better, as it sold half a million handsets and bagged 36 per cent of the market.

RIM will also be celebrating the gradual improvements which have been made to its BlackBerry App World service, which increased in size by 60 per cent over the last 12 months. It is still a minnow when compared with the App Store or Android Market, but quality is more important than quantity and many of the 200,000 Android apps lack this all-important asset.

It will be interesting to see how the BlackBerry range holds up in the coming months. With the arrival of the impressive BlackBerry Playbook tablet and the likelihood of a touchscreen Curve model on the market, things are looking bright.
