Canadian BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM), is apparently expanding the Storm range of smartphones with a third iteration, according to leaked images published last week.

The first two Storm handsets were innovative in the context of the existing BlackBerry line-up but they failed to find favour with critics or consumers, thanks to clunky touchscreen implementation and poor software support.

The third Storm handset, sensibly called the Storm 3, is apparently in development at RIM and according to a source quoted by tech site BGR, it will have a large 3.7 inch display and a powerful 1.2GHz processor under the hood.

At the moment the question over whether RIM will retain the Storm moniker for this upcoming handset is up for debate, particularly since the earlier versions were not exactly hit mobiles. Various codenames have been rumoured, but an official announcement is the only thing which will quell these industry murmurings.

The source says that UK consumers will be able to pick up the Storm 3 from some point in September, so there is still a long wait until it arrives. Its specs look healthy compared to the current crop of smartphones, but with dual-core monsters inbound, it will not be at the top of the pile upon its launch.
